Despicable Me 2 (2013)

Despicable_Me_2_posterI was really looking forward to this show simply because of Agnes, the cute youngest sibling, and the crazily adorable minions. And let me just say that, Despicable Me 2 totally didn’t disappoint at all. Great show. Entertaining, albeit having a typical simple storyline.

It’s nice to see villain turn father, Gru, exhibiting his fatherly behaviour in his own weird way.Β despicable-me-2-gru-edith-agnes-margoTrust me when I say, his own weird way. Haha. Him and his minions raising 3 girls. It’s weird alright, but it’s also somewhat sweet. πŸ™‚

New in this animation movie’s storyline is a plot for romance. πŸ˜‰despicable-me-2-gru-and-lucyYup. Gru got himself a girl. When they first met, I thought maybe the girl is some villain character for all of 5 minutes, then I realized she’s pretty cool. Lol!despicable-me-2-gru-lucyI think it’s great that the way they write and script the romance part is simple enough that kids would be able to understand easily. It’s very kid-friendly. Reason I say this is cause cartoons nowadays like to make things complicated and very adult-like, which I feel is ridiculous. So kudos to the writers and crew of Despicable Me. πŸ˜‰

I still feel myself melting under the cuteness of Agnes, the youngest sibling and daughter of Gru.Β despicable-me-2-agnesShe’s unbelievably adorable! It’s so adorable that everytime she appears onscreen, I feel like going, “It’s so adorable I’m gonna die!!!!!!!!” Lol!

And I’m glad they gave the minions a tad bit more screen time in this sequel. Considering the craze everyone is having over them, I think the producers and writers made the right move to put in more ‘minion-time’. πŸ˜‰Despicable_Me_2_Minion_Costumedespicable-me-2-minion-golfer-1The costumes they put the minions in is seriously hilarious! And really, I think no one is able to resist the charm of these yellow little things. That being said, liking the minions is one thing, going so crazy over it to the point of almost tearing down the McDonalds shutters to get first in line for the toys is a total different thing. πŸ˜‰ I’m glad I’m in the first category of liking the minions but not obsessing over them. πŸ˜‰ TeeHee! πŸ˜›

Though I gotta say, I don’t find them very likable when they turn purple and evil.Β Despicable_Me_2_purple_minionThey look pretty revolting. Haha. And the cause of them turning purple? The gross ‘muscle-man’ villain.Β Despicable_Me_2_villainLol! And yet again, I wanna commend the producers and writers of this show for making the villain kid-friendly. So, even though the bad guy is bad, he’s not hateable (is there such a word? Hhmmm). πŸ™‚

All in all, this is a really feel good show. I’d recommend it to everyone even though I know some guys will say it’s a waste of money to watch cartoon in the cinema. Lol. I know some of my guy friends did. Haha.

I’d definitely wanna watch this once in a while for entertainment purposes. Lol!

Hansel & Gretel : Witch Hunters (2013)

HanselGretel-Poster-IMAX-610x956What a twist to the childhood story of Hansel & Gretel. Or rather, it’s more like a spin-off of the original kid’s version. This movie tells of what happens when Hansel and Gretel both grew up. It’s at least better than the 2010 weird version of Alice In Wonderland which Johnny Depp starred in. πŸ˜‰ Much better if compared to that, even though that movie had Depp in it. πŸ˜‰

So Hansel and Gretel both grew up to be witch hunters after killing the witch who tried to eat them in the gingerbread house. I kinda expected the casts would be of a slightly younger generation, since it’s the life after the fairytale. It’s just logical to have the storyline around their late teens/early 20s. Definitely didn’t expect an extremely adult version of Hansel and Gretel. Kinda making it a little hard to comprehend, but I’m not complaining. πŸ˜‰

Jeremy Renner as Hansel.Β Hansel-And-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-Jeremy-RennerAlbeit a little old, his sarcasm and slightly nonchalant attitude in this movie made him somewhat a little more ‘boyish’. Not to mention, a little more likable too. Although, I gotta say, I prefer watching him in Mission : Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), and was more attracted to him when he worked the aarows and bow in The AvengersΒ (2012). Sad to say, this is not a role he (or any other actors, I feel) could shine much. Don’t think it’s his fault. Most probably the character plot is to be blamed. Renner is one of those few actors that I feel is not really good looking but yet I don’t mind watching him time again appearing different shows.jeremy_rennerNo, not a fan, but I just don’t mind watching him on screen.

Female lead Gemma Arterton plays Gretel.Β Hansel-and-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-Gemma-ArtertonShe’s pretty, I’d give her that. But in this movie, her acting skills kinda falls flat. Or maybe like I said earlier, it’s the character plot, I’m not sure. Her character just don’t shine, and she’s supposed to be the star of the show. I felt that not only Renner outshone her, but even supporting cast member Pihla Viitala who plays good witch, Mina, outshone her a little, me thinks.Β Hansel-and-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-Pihla-ViitalaI find myself noticing Viitala more than Arterton in the show. πŸ˜‰ Oh, and I find it a little weird that Hansel and Gretel seem to appear more like lovers than siblings. hansel and gretelSeriously. Lol! I don’t know how the director directed them, but I totally didn’t get any sibling vibe from either Renner or Arterton. Almost from the start, it feels like they’re actually lovers. Of course minus the parts when they were kids. πŸ˜‰

Thought the evil witch, Muriel, looked pretty good. Well, from certain angles. πŸ˜‰Hansel-Gretel-Witch-Hunters-Famke-JanssenI actually find Famke Janssen more attractive than Arterton. And to think that she’s so much older too! She has that ‘no-nonsense-prim-and-proper-but-still-look-good’ look. ;P Haha! And I can’t help noticing that she looks a little like Demi Moore. πŸ˜‰ But of course, all that is before she showed her true colours as the evil witch…….Β Hansel-Gretel-evil witchGot a shocked when she suddenly transformed. Lol. But still not as scary as the some of the witches/vampires/monsters in other shows I guess. Maybe they have to tone it down, cause there are probably many kids watching this movie. πŸ˜‰ Anyway, I just realized why she looks so familiar while reading up about her for this blog post. Famke Janssen is the lovely actress who played the role of Jean Grey in X-Men trilogy movies!Jean Grey 2Doesn’t look like she aged much, eh?

Was slightly disappointed with the gingerbread(candy) house.Β HanselandGretel_GingerbreadHouseThey really shouldn’t darken this scene, I feel. It makes the house looks so inedible. It would be so much more appealing if its brighter, making it look like a real attractive gingerbread house. But that’s just my personal opinion of course. πŸ˜‰

All in all, not too bad a movie. Not amazing, but it’s those kind of shows that I don’t mind watching again, once in a long while. πŸ™‚

So Undercover (2012)

So_Undercover_posterIn short, this is like Sandra Bullock’s Miss Congeniality (2000), but the teenage version. It’s an entertaining watch on a lazy evening. Just a typical chick-flick. But I gotta say, the twist at the end is pretty good. Then again, because it’s a Miley Cyrus chick-flick, the twist in the storyline somehow lacks the impact. πŸ˜‰ But it’s still an enjoyable relaxing show.

The main character is a typical Miley Cyrus role. πŸ™‚ In Hannah Montana, she played a double life pop-star/student, while in this movie, she transformed herself from a tomboy-ish girl into one of those ‘mean girls’.miley-so-undercover-miley-cyrus-beforeShe went from being the biker chick (above), to being the pretty ‘plastic’ girl (below).Miley Cyrus So Undercover_afterI really think Miley suits well in roles like this. Her girl-next-door behavior, though a little exaggerated, is believable and entertaining. Love the way she tries to imitate those ‘bimbo’ girls say “OH MY GAWD~!” Totally hilarious! Or according to what I learnt from the movie, ‘totes’! πŸ˜‰

There isn’t really a male lead, but the actor with the most screen time would be Jeremy Piven.So-Undercover_jeremy_pivenHe didn’t really deliver an outstanding performance though. I can’t even remember how he looks like after watching the show. Guess he didn’t make much of an impression.

Then there’s Mike O’Malley, who plays Miley’s character’s father.Β So_Undercover_Mike-OMalleyIt was really weird for me cause I’m used to seeing O’Malley as Glee’s Kurt Hummel’s father, Burt Hummel. So my first thought when he first popped onto the screen is, “Kurt’s father is playing Miley’s father???” Haha! =P

Finally, what is a chick-flick without a heartthrob right? And this time, Josh Bowman steps up to the the heartthrob of the show.so_undercover_josh_bowmanGotta say, from most angles, Bowman looks real good. But there’s nothing about him that attracts my interest. Haha. I guess, good looks can only get you so far. You’ve gotta have that presence and charm. πŸ˜‰

Anyways, do not expect a blockbuster quality in this show. That aside, this is a really relaxing enjoyable movie. πŸ™‚

Ah Boys To Men 2 (2013)

Ahboystomenposter2Finally it’s out. Been waiting for this movie for almost 3 months now. One thing I’m glad is that, for this show, the second part is released less than half a year after the first part, unlike many Hollywood movies where we had to wait a minimum of a year to watch the second part of an installment. And let me just say that, Ah Boys To Men 2 really didn’t disappoint. If you think the first show was good, this part 2 is even better, by a couple of miles. Jack Neo should give himself a couple of pat on his back. I’m really glad that in this second part, we’re able to see a lot of character development. The story is not solely focused on the main character.

Joshua Tan returns as main character Ken Chow.Β pc_600x450 (2)We can see in this installment that he’s starting to ‘man-up’. Sadly though, as a main character, he his character didn’t have much room to expend, unlike that of his peers. I know a couple of people who are fascinated over him, but I just don’t understand why. I thought he was an average actor when I saw him in Ah Boys To Men, but now that his co-stars’ characters have developed, and they have room to display their acting skills, Tan just pales in comparison. He doesn’t really have much of that ‘wow’ factor as an actor and he’s a little bland in his acting. Then again, I’ve only seen him in one movie, so it’s a little hard to judge, ay? πŸ˜‰

Some of those who’ve caught my attention is Tosh Zhang, who plays the new recruits’ Sergeant Ong.Β ah boys to men 2_tosh zhangNope. Trust me. He’s not good looking. But he’s got that ‘thing’ about him that makes you notice him, but yet, I can’t really pinpoint exactly what that ‘thing’ is.

Then there’s actor Wang Wei Liang.Β pc_600x450 (1)Wang plays the role of ‘Lobang’. Do not be fooled by how serious he looks here. πŸ˜‰ He’s a real cheeky brat in the training. As much as a nuisance he is sometimes, you really can’t bring yourself to dislike him.

I was surprised at how different this fella looks in real life and in this movie.Β ABTM-6Maxi Lim, who plays goody two-shoes, Aloysius a.k.a. ‘Wayang King’. Wow. Great job portraying the authorities’ pet. Spot on. Someone who always wanna be noticed as the best and most perfect in the group, someone who is afraid of getting into trouble with his superior, someone who is always a party pooper, someone who always suck up to those above him, etc etc. He keeps reminding you of the different people you’ve met in your life who’s like that. πŸ˜‰

There’s a couple others who did fairly well too. Look out for the characters ‘IP Man’, ‘Ismail’ and ‘Muthu’. I love the plot of this entire movie. Am glad that we’re able to see more of the training process as well. Even the training scenes were hilarious. And it’s always funny when the group gather around and talk. ah boys to men groupAh Boys to Menγ€Šζ–°ε…΅ζ£δΌ γ€‹Part 2 movie scene 1pc_600x450 (3)You see, the key to enjoying a Singaporean movie is to understand the conversations going onscreen. Trust me. It’s like the best comedy ever, and they don’t even need to try that hard to act funny. The script is good enough. πŸ™‚

As I’ve mentioned before in my previous post of ‘Ah Boys To Men – Part 1‘, I love movies like that. Training to be a cop or soldier or fireman, etc etc. And it’s awesome and super motivating to see how they started from wimps and ended up being a warrior, so called warrior at least. pc_600x450ABTM-1Lol. And I just read an article that reported that Jack Neo is gonna come up with the 3rd installment of Ah Boys To Men. He didn’t plan for it previously, but due to overwhelming request from the viewers, he decided to produce another installment. I can’t wait for it to be released! =D

A Princess For Christmas (2011)

APrincessForChristmas2011PosterThis, without a doubt, it an all-round feel good Christmas movie, which I watched about 2 weeks ago. Yeah, a little late for Christmas, but hey, to me, there’s no allocated time to watch a feel good movie. πŸ˜‰ It’s pretty obvious that this is actually a slightly medium to low budget kind of movie. But lucky for it, almost everybody loves a sappy cheesy story once in a while. Specially if it is a Christmas themed movie. Typical cliche storyline. As a matter of fact, it’s so typical that there’s not really any climax to the movie. Poor girl visits duke, fell in love with duke’s son, duke breaks up with his girlfriends, marry the poor girl in the end. It’s just the kind of movie that puts a smile on your face throughout the show. That is, if you’re a girl, or a guy who likes happy endings. πŸ˜‰

The ‘princess’ of the movie is played by Irish actress Katie McGrath.Β Katie_McGrath_A_Princess_for_Christmas_TV_Movie-12Thought she looked fairly fake here. Don’t get me wrong. She’s got all the ‘pretty-look’ going along very well. But, I think she tried too hard to be cheerful and bubbly, that it ended up looking really forced. Which was kinda surprising cause, I thought she’s quite an above average actress when I first saw her in the series, Merlin. Quite captivating as the sweet girl turned evil, Morgana.Β morgana (1)Merlin 5She had that certain aura around her that attracts your attention when she was playing the role of Morgana. Unfortunately though, in this movie, she falls kinda flat. But luckily, you can’t really go too wrong with a Christmas-princess-themed movie, so it didn’t really destroy the show. πŸ˜‰

Male lead was played by a Sam Heughan. Never heard of him before, maybe cause he’s a Scottish actor, but he does look like a prince. He’s got that regal and classy style about him.Β aprincessforchristmas2011_samheughanDefinitely above average looking. From certain angles, he can be considered pretty good looking in my opinion. I do find him a little stiff in his acting though. Just a little. Or maybe it’s just the storyline that didn’t allow him to explore his character. πŸ˜‰

English actor Roger Moore, plays the grumpy turned warm and friendly Duke of Castlebury.Β A Princess Story Roger MooreThink he played the grumpy Duke better than the warm and friendly one, but then again, as I’ve mentioned above, could be the problem of the script which barely leaves any area for character development. I mean, he is the actor who replaced Sean Connery as James Bond, so there must be something to his acting skills right? πŸ˜‰

But the character which caught my attention is the butler, Paisley.a-princess-for-christmas_butlerMiles Richardson portrays this character really well, making him very likable. The friendly but smart butler, who does things for the good of the Duke. πŸ™‚

Overall, this is what I’d consider a medium to low budget show. But as I’ve said, you can’t really go wrong with a ‘Christmas-princess-themed’ movie. In the harsh world we live in today, it’s nice to escape into this kinda childhood fantasy once in a while. Would say it’s a good movie, but at least it leaves you smiling and your heart feeling warm, at the end of the show. πŸ™‚A-Princess-for-Christmas-Katie-McGrath-Sam-Heughan-kiss

Warm Bodies (2013)

Warm_Bodies_Theatrical_PosterWhen I first heard of this show and saw the poster, I thought it looked like some low budget movie. Wasn’t really interested to watch it. That is, of course, until I found out this show stars Nicholas Hoult. πŸ˜‰ And I thought, well, however bad this show is, at least there’s an eye candy to watch, right? Kinda forgot that the said ‘eye candy’ was made up to be a brain-eating zombie in this movie though. =p

Nonetheless, I’m glad I did watch this show in the cinema. It’s a really really nice show in my opinion. Pretty average storyline, but what makes this zombie movie different from others is that, this has a happy ending. A really sweet and happy ending. And as cliche as it may sound, I like happy endings. Don’t really fancy the kinda movies that everyone dies in the end, or maybe one or two left alive at the end. Unless of course, those movies have really good storyline, like ‘Armageddon’ or ‘I Am Legend’. As far as zombie movies go, this one is pretty much a ‘feel-good’ one.

In my opinion, even with the crazy makeup on his face, Nicholas Hoult still manages to look……. endearing, somehow. In a zombie-ish kinda way. πŸ˜‰warm-bodies-image-nicholas-hoult (2)I love the internal monologues done by Hoult’s character, R. It’s funny. But it’s very natural, cause it sounds like the kind of things we’d think if we were in that situation. Thought he did a great job making himself a lovable zombie (which I’m pretty sure is required by this movie, as it is a chick flick afterall) as well. Really can’t help but just go ‘aawww’ over his character. It’s just to sweet, his fascination and care for the human girl. I actually like watching Hoult here even more than in Jack, The Giant Slayer. Seriously. πŸ™‚

Female lead, Teresa Palmer fits into the roll like its her second skin.Warm Bodies - Teresa PalmerFor a while at the beginning of the show, I was wondering if she is Kristen Stewart with her hair dyed blonde. But no. After a while it’s not hard to differentiate them. Two different acting styles. I kinda thought Palmer has this subtle physical beauty. It’s not the kind of Hollywood beauty that makes people drool over her, but the kind that makes people like her.

The other person who stood out in this movie for me was main character, Julie’s (played by Palmer) bestie. She’s only a minor character, but somehow, her quirkiness and humor caught my attention.Β analeigh-tipton-in-warm-bodies_originalActress Analeigh Tipton did a pretty good job, considering she managed to shine in her role as a minor character. And I spent the entire movie wondering why she looks so familiar to me. So I came home and googled her. Lo behold, no wonder she looks familiar. As a fan of America’s Next Top Model, I never missed any cycle of that reality series. And Analeigh here is the top 3 finalist in ANTM cycle 11. No wonder she looks so familiar. She was one of my favourite during that cycle, second only to Samantha Potter who was a finalist as well. Here are some of her best shots during that cycle.analeigh_ANTM1YouΓ•re Beautiful, Now ChangeThe Final FiveLove the last picture above. Edgy with a feminine touch. Really didn’t know she could act as well. Haha. But good job for someone who has not much experience in acting.

I thought the villains in this movie aren’t scary at all, considering it’s supposed to be a zombie-movie. The bonies, that’s what they’re called.Β warm-bodies-preview-boniesSupposedly skeletal zombies who’ve irretrievably lost all traces of humanity. Fairly easy to kill though. Guess the show is not bout killing these bonies. πŸ˜‰

Watch out for this.
nicholas-hoult-warm-bodiesKinda funny. The awkward moment when you find a zombie book and compare its cover with the zombie sitting in front of you. =P Haha!

As ironic as it sounds, this ‘zombie-movie’ left me feeling warmth in my heart. Kinda made me think that, maybe sometimes, the world just needs a little tender loving care. =) Then again, maybe not. This only happens in movies. =P

Would definitely but a copy for myself so I can watch it whenever I want. πŸ™‚

P.S : Didn’t tag this as ‘horror’ cause it doesn’t seem very horrific to me. πŸ˜‰

Ah Boys To Men – Part 1 (2012)

AhboystomenposterI’ve always liked Singaporean movies. Most of them anyway. The raw humour, the sarcasm, the usage of all three languages (English, Mandarin and Hokkien)Β and the ability to paint a very realistic picture of life is just so intriguing. Not to mention their ‘innocently’ thrown in dirty jokes or phrases. πŸ˜‰ Add in my one of my favourite ingredient in a movie, army/police training, and I really have no complains for this show. Given, there’s no ‘big-shot’ names casted here (for example, no Mark Lee), this is still a really nice and entertaining show to watch.

Main character, Ken Chow, played by Joshua Tan did a pretty good job portraying a spoilt rich teenager. I’m sorry, let me rephrase that. A spoilt, rich and childish teenager who dreads joining the Singapore National Service Training, and is trying his damn hardest to get out of it. Ah-Boys-To-men-KEN-CHOWWell, of course, ‘you can never run from the law’. πŸ˜‰ He ended up still having to go for the training. Tan, though not really hot to the eye after he got his crew-cut, still manages to exudes his presence as the main character.

It’s pretty hilarous looking at the new recruits, most a softie and undisciplined, trying to get used to the routine and training. ah-boys-to-men-recruitsThis entire movie kinda reminded me of the time when Malaysia first implemented its National Service law, and we were all dreading it, praying that we won’t be selected for the training. I remember my year was the first batched for the country’s National Service Program. Anyways, I love watching movies or series like this. Where they train really lame-ass recruits until at the end, they become successful, and tough, and full of character and dicipline.
