Belated Mother’s Day Dinner @ Perut Rumah, Kelawai Road

20140630-205732-75452951.jpgI’m really happy Aun Ling recommended this place to me. Very seldom do we find good nyonya food and great atmosphere here in Penang. Decided to bring mum here for a belated Mother’s Day treat. She loves Chinese/local food anyway. And it was a good decision to try out this place cause she loves it!  🙂 And for the record, I love it too!20140630-205735-75455524.jpgWe ordered about 4 different dishes and they were all delicious. This place has now become quite a favourite for both my mum and I. 🙂

First up, we had the ‘Kapitan Curry Chicken’. 20140630-205736-75456920.jpgThis were utterly yummy. The chicken was tender and well cooked. The curry was thick and rich in flavour. No complaints at all. Seriously.

We also ordered the ‘Jiu Hu Char’. 20140630-205739-75459654.jpgThis place is the first place I went to that serves this dish with a separate dish of green veggie leaves. Great idea if you asked me. The dish mixed with rice? Yummy. The dish wrapped in the veggie? Delicious!

And a must try at any nyonya restaurant is the ‘Lor Bak’. 20140630-205742-75462998.jpgThankfully, the ‘Lor Bak’ here didn’t disappoint. As a matter of fact, it was seasoned so perfectly, mum and I actually ordered a second helping. Yes. We did. It was delish! 😀 This has now become our ‘regular dish’ every time we have dinner there. 🙂

Just to top it off, we ordered the ‘Otak-otak’. 20140630-205745-75465776.jpgThis comes in small ‘1-person serving’ packet, and by packet, we mean wrapped in leaves. Even though this is not the best ‘otak-otak’ I’ve had, it’s still pretty good. Personal opinion, as good as it is, it’s a step behind the other dishes in taste. That, like I mentioned, is just my personal opinion. 🙂

Overall, I love the place. 20140630-211607-76567753.jpgGreat food, nice ambiance, pretty good service and pretty easy parking (it’s actually a bungalow with its own carpark). And best of all, mum loves the place! Only the best for my mum! 🙂20140701-154348-56628375.jpg

Here’s To Another Year

20140617-230520-83120293.jpgAlbeit there being a couple of celebrations before the actual day, today passes pretty peacefully, with my mum, which is pretty awesome since it’s been a while since I last celebrated with her on the actual day. 🙂

Took time off from work, went for buffet lunch at E&O Hotel with mum then we spend the afternoon shopping. Spoiled myself with a new bag and a new pair of sunglasses. 20140617-230711-83231704.jpgAbsolutely love them. 🙂

28 years. Looking back, I’ve come pretty far and done so much, but yet, there’s still so much more that I want to accomplish. Here’s to hoping that I can check off a couple of more things off my list. 😉 I hope this one year before my 29th birthday will be a really fruitful one, and when I look back next year, I’ll feel proud of what has been accomplished in a year and there will be no regrets.

Happy birthday, Angela. 🙂

Happy 2014!

No resolutions for me this year around. Grew out of resolutions. 😛

Instead, I decided to do some planning for the year 2014. Written plans. I realized that written plans are more likely to come to pass than keeping resolutions.

Super stoked for 2014 actually! So many things planned. There’s this feeling deep down that tells me, 2014 is gonna be an awesome year where my world will be turned all around. Planning to do so many things differently this year. Also planning to start some seriously cool ‘tradition’ that I hope will go on the rest of my life. 😀

Fingers crossed that by 31 Dec 2014, I’ll be able to check off at the very least 85% of my written plans. Its not that I’m not optimistic. avoiding the 100%. I’m just being realistic. 😉

Father’s Day At Church, Among Other Things

Yesterday was my first time in years playing in a music team for the two Sunday services at church. Previously (when I was in my teens), I was only playing at the Youth Meets. After being ‘lost’ for 8-9 years, coming back to church, the last thing I expected is to be roped into trying out for the worship team again so soon. But I gotta say, I’m glad, cause that’s where my passion in serving God is. 😉

No, I’m not officially in the main service worship team yet. Still in the learning and training mode. Thank God for great mentors. Instrument : Bass. Yup. Never would I imagine that I’ll be able to play bass. I’ve always only played the guitar and piano, sometimes the keyboard, but never bass. So it’s quite overwhelming yesterday. And I was on duty yesterday because for Father’s Day, they wanted all the females to be on duty, giving the men some rest. 😉 Hence, only female bassist around? Yours truly. Haha. I’m just thankful that I didn’t mess anything up for the team, and worship time was awesome.

As religious as it sounds, I really thank God for the talents he’s given me and also the opportunity for my to use it to glorify Him. It’s an amazing feeling to be serving God. 20130521-114050.jpgOn a side note, it’s kinda unfortunate that the first time I step back up on stage, it’s Father’s Day. Needless to say, I can’t stop myself tearing up (yes, right there on the stage) when the youths did a little sketch/song for all the fathers in church. They sang ‘Butterfly Kisses’ by Bob Carlisle and acted out the scenes in the song. I really can’t stop the tears flowing right there and then on the stage. I wished I get to experience all that with my dad, but I guess sometimes, we don’t always get what we want in life.

I wish I had more time with my dad. More years to spend with him, more football matches to watch together, more dinners to eat together. It’s my always been my dream to have my dad walk me down the aisle, and as silly as it sounds in the Asian culture, I’ve always wanted to have a ‘father-daughter’ dance at my wedding dinner. But these dreams are ripped away the day my dad collapse from a heart attack and left me and mum. Now, I’m left with my own imagination as to how my dad would feel and react to the various happenings in my life if he is still around. Graduation, boyfriends, breakups, work life, etc etc. I guess this is one of the few things that time can’t heal. 11 years down the road and I still feel the pinch. I’ll always miss my dad.

But I’m glad that I still have my big Daddy up above looking after mum and I every step of the way. God is always good.

Dinner @ Pinocchio Ristorante

20130415-122714.jpgAngie and Imee treated to me this place for my belated birthday dinner. Of all the places I was treated this year, I enjoyed this the most, cause it’s somewhere new where we haven’t tried before. I love going to new places for food. New stuff to try, new stuff to write about. Haha. Bless them both for thinking of trying new places. Think it’s becoming a tradition for the 3 of us to go somewhere new everytime each of us have a birthday. 😉

Pinocchio is a nice cozy little restaurant along Penang Road, two shops away from Soho. Love the atmosphere there. It’s air-conditioned, though it takes a while for you to feel the coolness. They’ve got nice soothing music playing, mostly instrumental and the seatings are comfy. The service here is kinda really slow though. Slow, but good. Despite the slow service, it’s safe to say we’re very satisfied with the service given.

Love the variety of beverages they have here. Seriously. And the fancy names. Lol. We ordered a mocktail each.20130415-122728.jpgThe orange one, ‘Summer Girl’ is mine. A little too sweet for my liking but it’s not bad. Kinda like it after a while. The middle yellow one is Imelda’s ‘Mondo Bizaro’. Not sure what she thought of it, but I find it tasting a little like chewing gum. Haha. And the red one is something called a ‘Super X Girlfriend’ ordered by Angie. I thought it tasted like cough syrup. 😉 So, I guess I still prefer my ‘Summer Girl’. Relatively speaking. Lol.

They gave us some bread with olive oil for some kinda starters.20130415-122756.jpgOr maybe it was complimentary cause we were waiting pretty long for our food. 😉

Angie had the ‘Pinocchio’s Wild Mushroom’.20130415-122809.jpgIt’s actually just mushroom soup with a fancy name. 😉 It may look like a big portion when the food first arrived, but trust me, the bowl is pretty shallow. But the other dishes served are in pretty big portions.

Imelda ordered the ‘Creamy Mushroom Bruschetta’.20130415-122832.jpgI didn’t get a taste of this but according to her, she loves it. So, I guess it must be nice. Maybe I’ll try that the next time I’m there. 🙂 She also ordered a pizza called ‘The Lot’. 20130415-122842.jpgThe name pretty much speaks for it. It has the ‘lot’ in it. Meaning, almost every single ingredient. Had a bite of it, and it’s really not bad. But some of the ingredients don’t really mash well with others. Other than that, it’s alright. 🙂

I ordered the ‘Pasta Ariabita with Chicken’.20130415-122823.jpgSpaghetti. With chicken chunks. It’s nice. Would be even better if they added more of the spice into the sauce. But yeah, I’m satisfied with it. And what I love about it is that when they say they say with chicken chunks, they really give you a lot of chicken chunks, unlike some other places which only sprinkle a little bit on chicken flakes onto the dish. I won’t hesitate to order this in the future. 🙂

Satisfying meal with awesome company makes a great night. And I’m happy we found another nice new place for food. So far, all the new places we’ve tried for our birthdays last year have been really satisfactory. And this one just adds to the list. One of the best birthday treats I had this year cause we get to try a new place and it’s nice~! 🙂
